Educator
Dr. Robert Brooks is an associated faculty in Jazz Saxophone at The Ohio State University. He maintains a full saxophone studio and his teaching duties include coaching jazz combos, teaching Advanced Jazz Improvisation, oversaw High Jazz Band Day as a part of the annual Ohio State University Jazz Festival, started and led the Ohio State University High School Honor Jazz Band, and teaches the summer Jazz and Saxophone Camps. He also serves as the Faculty Advisor for the Jazz Club at The Ohio State.
My ultimate goal as an educator is to inspire betterment. I hope to inspire my students to become better musicians, better instrumentalists, better ensemble members, better listeners, and better people through music. I use a variety of techniques to achieve this from small things like keeping lessons clearly organized, outlining goals per week, per performance, and per semester to the greater life lessons we can learn from music like identifying and confronting one’s faults and always striving to become a better version of ourselves each and every day. I want my students to think critically about the music they make and to make informed decisions when they practice and perform. If they can successfully accomplish these tasks for themselves, they are poised to realize their full potential as musicians and people.
